In the military world, a different time format is used for paperwork and coordinating operations. This format, also known as military time, has also infiltrated civilian life - especially in the 24/7 world of technology. If you are ever unsure what the military time format is saying, you can easily convert it using a few simple steps.
The first step to convert military time to standard times involves understanding how the system works. Military time is broken into "hours" that range from 00 to 23:59 (midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200). The time are specified in four digits, with each of the numbers specifying an hour or a minute with no divider between them. So if you have a military time such as 0315, you know it specifies 3 hours and 15 minutes.
In order to convert 0315 military time to standard times, start by figuring out if it's "ante meridiem" (before noon) or "post meridiem" (after noon). In this example, it's before noon (ante meridiem) since the first two digits are less than 12. This means that one way to express this in standard times would be 3:15 AM.
If you wanted 3:15 PM in standard times, you can subtract 12 from 0315 and arrive at 1315 – which would then be 1:15 PM in standard times after converting it back up to 12-hour clock format as opposed to a 24-hour clock format.
